My new years resolutions for 2012...

1. Cook and bake more, and be more creative and daring with recipes.

2. Write a book.

3. Blog more, at least twice a week.

4. Explore my talents and find out what I want to do with my life.

5. Exercise more often. Even though it's on my list every year I never do it, but i'm gonna try!

6. Try and get the family together more often.

7. Laugh, be positive and just be happier in general.

8. Be tidier, clean my room, bathroom and car more often.

9. Have a proper clear out, all the junk and clothes I don't want anymore and give them to charity, I've been saying I'll do it for years and it's never happened, but this time it will!

10. Most importantly, appreciate the people in my life whilst they're still here, and appreciate everything else I have, focus on the good and try and ignore the bad.

2011 has been a really hard year for me, nothing particularly good has come out of it, everything good I have in my life was there before 2011. Although I am grateful to have all the people I love still with me, this year has brought a lot of misery, more than I ever even knew I could feel and for the first time ever I am so glad to say goodbye to the year and look forward to the next. There's something quite therapeutic about starting over again, even though tomorrow I will be the same person I am today, there's definitely going to be some major changes in my life, and I absolutely cannot wait.

I wish you all the best for 2012. Happy new year!! xxx

Brand Alley

A few years ago I signed up for a website called Secret Sales, the way they work is that if you sign up to their website, you become part of their 'exclusive club' which means you have access to their designer sales which only last for a certain number of days. They are completely genuine and registration is free so I would definitely recommend everyone signing up, you have nothing to lose!

The purpose of this blog is actually to tell you about the website Brand Alley, it's the exact same concept, designer sales that last a few days but the great thing about Brand Alley is that they keep holding OPI Sales! They actually have one on now lasting until Sunday so anyone who fancies getting some OPI polishes for a discount go have a look! They've got a few mini collections and some full size collections aswell for up to 50% off so they're a really good deal. Do you really need anymore excuses to go buy nail polish? :)

Jamie Oliver anyone?

Can I be cheeky and ask a favour?

My mum sells Jamie at Home products, basically stuff for the kitchen, home, garden and a few bath and body bits too. July is her qualifying month to become a manager, to do this she needs sales, and lots of them, £1500 worth to be precise, she's on £755...
She's been working for Jamie at Home for around 2 years now and has been let down time and time again by her team and her party hosts, she's had 5 out of her 8 parties this month cancelled and is getting pretty pessimistic about reaching her goal.
I really just need to spread the word because every small order will help, if everyone she knew ordered something she'd easily reach her target, it's just getting them to place an order that's the problem!
I know most of my followers are overseas but I do have a few in England, and she's happy to post the products to you herself she just needs sales!!

She's offering 20% off any order as she's not interested in commission (she get's 20% commission) she just needs the sales to add up. Please guys, spread the word, I would be really really grateful even if you just had a browse!!

Her website is www.jamieathome.me/jannorth and it's excluding DVDs, books and food as she doesn't actually sell them. So please have a look through and if you see any thing that takes your fancy, let me know. Please DON'T order off the website as that doesn't go through her.

Contact me by either leaving a comment, emailing me (rachaelashard@hotmail.co.uk) or ringing me (07817771112)

Or go straight to her:

The decorator

An interesting little story I was given in my Body Shop make up training...

If you were having the decorator in to emulsion your lounge walls and he came in and took the lid off his paint, dipped his hand in and put the paint on the walls with his fingers, you'd think he was slightly mad and would want him out of the house quickly.

If the decorator came along and used a huge sponge to paint the walls, he'd get a nice finish but he would use five tins of paint.

If the decorator came along and used a brush to paint the walls, he'd get a nice finish and only use the one tin of paint that the job required.

Therefore, if we use our fingers to put our foundation on, they are warm and so is our face so the product will start to dry and not spread very easily and we are not going to get a good result. Then we wash our hands and most of the foundation goes straight down the plug hole.

If we use a make-up sponge to put foundation on, we are going to get a better finish even though we wipe off nearly as much as we put on. However we then come to wash the sponge and again a lot goes down the plug hole but also a lot stays in the sponge which is wasteful and a bringing ground for germs.

(The point is, we should use a brush to put our foundation on)

--------------------------------------------------

I found this really interesting as I used to use a brush and have since got into the habit of just using my hand, the decorator story makes you realise how obvious it is that you should use a brush. I personally don't use brushes from the Body Shop, only because my Grandma bought me a set from Arbonne and I don't really need more than one of each. But I have them in my kit and have used them and they're great, definitely recommend them!

--------------------------------------------------

Another little bit of advice they gave me:
When doing a facial, pat the eye cream on with your ring or little finger. Firstly, these two digits are our weakest fingers and so are gentle around the eye area. The reason we pat is because we don't want to drag the delicate skin by rubbing the cream in and the other advantage is that we have natural drainage all around our socket bone, so if we pat it encourages any fluid build up to drain away naturally which is a great tip for the morning after. We also have natural drainage around our jaw line.

L'oreal Infallible

I really like this foundation, although I think I was a bit optimistic with it, I bought it just before I went to Tenerife so I got a shade darker than I needed and even with my tan it's slightly too dark :( looks okay with some powder over the top though. Here's some pictures:

To use this foundation, you twist the red part and, as you can see in the third picture, the foundation comes out the top of the brush and you can just brush it straight onto your face. I think the thing I like the most about this is the way it's got a piece of plastic inside that gets pushed down when you twist the top, so you literally get every last bit of the foundation and none is wasted, as you can see in the first picture it's completely clean at the top.
It says on the bottle that this foundation is supposed to last 24 hours, I can't say I've had it on for 24 hours so I don't know whether or not this is true, but it certainly lasts all day, and I don't think I've ever had a foundation that actually lasts all day without paying a lot of money for it.
I think the only downside to this foundation is that you can't wash the brush, it's really soft and fluffy when you first get it, but then after a few uses it gets all clogged up with foundation and is a bit streaky on your face. Apart from that I really love this foundation and definitely recommend it, I will probably re-purchase this when I've used it up, and I've never found a foundation that I've wanted to re-purchase, so this is definitely a success!

Hope this is helpful, thanks for reading! xxx

Neutrogena Multi Defence

I'm back!!! It's been a very long time since I blogged, I've had exams and have started to do The Body Shop at Home to earn a bit of extra money, on top of my other two jobs, so I've been pretty busy! But I think I'm back on track now, hopefully :)

So, I know the multi defence range isn't new anymore, it was when I planned to do this review but never mind, some of you might not have tried it.

I'll start with the gentle purifying scrub, as you can see I've nearly finished it, I think I've had it for about 6 weeks. I don't love it, it's a good scrub it does the job, I haven't had any blemishes and it doesn't make my skin dry or oily, the only problem I have with it is that, no matter how much I wash my face and my hands, when I go to put my moisturiser on I can still feel some of the tiny exfoliating beads, they're impossible to get off!! Maybe that's just me though :)

The daily moisturiser is good, it doesn't make my skin too oily and I can put my make up on straight after if i'm in a hurry. Again though I don't love it, I don't know if it's just me being picky but I think it smells awful! That's again probably just me though because my boyfriend doesn't think it smells bad and doesn't understand why I think it does :/. So in my opinion, I wouldn't bother with these again and I wouldn't recommend them, I much prefer Neutrogena's grapefruit scrub or their 'orange' range, I can't remember what it's called but they're all in orange bottles, so go for that instead :)

I hope that was helpful! If any of you have tried it let me know what you think, especially if you had the same problems as me or not. Come back tomorrow for a review on my foundation!

Own Brand: Boots

I decided to combine part of my haul with a new idea I had. When sat in the bath the other day I realised that I use quite a lot of 'own brand' products that, in my opinion, are just as good as ones made by specific cosmetic oriented companies. So, from now on, every time I find myself trying to choose between products, I will (try to) get an own brand product so I can test it out against my usual purchases.

To start with, I have Boots Expert Cuticle Conditioner and Boots Expert Nail Strengthener.

This cuticle cream is great, to start with it smells soo good, it has a sort of sun tan smell and reminds me of summer, always a good thing! As far as I can tell so far it works well, my cuticles aren't particularly bad at the moment anyway but this seems to be keeping them healthy and doing all the things my previous cuticle cream did.

Next up is the Boots expert Nail Hardener. I'm not really too sure what to make of this, my previous nail hardener was one that you applied like a nail polish but then you rubbed it into your nails which would eventually absorb it. With this Boots version, you put it on and it sits on your nails like a clear nail polish, I'm not too sure I like this, I think it made me feel like it was doing my nails some good when they soaked it all up but I can't really imagine this is doing anything to them. I have to say though, after wearing it a few times my nails do feel much less brittle, whether they've repaired themself or it's the nail hardener I don't know though! :/
What I do like about this though is the bottle it comes in, it's really cute :D it's just a little short round thing and I don't seem to worry about putting it in my bag, I think the bottle is thicker.

Wow I can't believe how long it's been since I did a proper blog post. I expected to be quite up to date without school getting in the way but it's been the complete opposite and I haven't had any time at all! March Haul

I've been trying not to spend too much this month, so apart from essentials all I really got was a bag, a photo frame and a new nail polish. Quite boring I'm sorry guys! Anyway, there's still quite a lot of it so instead of doing one very long, tedious post I'll spin it out and do a few products a day, that's a bit easier to handle I think :)

Products:
Boots expert cuticle and nail moisturiser: £4.09
Boots expert nail strength solution: £4.09
Garnier comforting cleansing milk (make up remover): £2
L'Oreal infallible foundation: £9.99
Maybelline dream LUMItouch highlighting concealer: £6.99
Neutrogena oil-free moisturiser: £4.07
Revlon Sunshine Sparkle nail polish: £6.49

Hessian bag £28 GLAM Originals
LOVE frame £8 GLAM Originals

My mum does a Jamie at Home party plan business and has a friend who does a similar thing but with GLAM Originals, basically, they host parties at peoples houses and show them their products, usually with a few discounts or freebies thrown in, they're fab! The two of them hold parties for each other and my mum recently had one, I love their stuff, their stock has expanded so much since the last time they had one, it used to be just jewellery and shoes but now they've got clothes, accessories, home stuff and all sorts. I am an absolute freak when it comes to photo frames and got ridiculously excited when I saw she had some I couldn't choose! My mum split her commission with me and these are the two products I bought:

The picture frame is so cute, it's on my windowsill now and I love the way our heads in the picture each go into the bumps of the heart, well planned ;). The bag is lovely, I'm not entirely sure what it's made of, I think it's hessian but it smells like horse hair! Yeugh. It looks good though, and is pretty big so it's practical, whoop! It does up with a toggle which I think is cute aswell.
I'd definitey urge you to check out the GLAM website, as far as I know I think they only ship to the UK but I could be mistaken, they've got all sorts of lovely products!

OPI San-Tan-Tonio

I know, I know, not exactly a brand new shade but believe it or not, I am not a huge OPI fan. They're great but just far too pricey in my opinion :/. Anyway, I recieved this yesterday when I got home and was very excited to put it on! It's from their Texas collection and is actually only my second ever OPI, and since my other one is very glittery (Shimmer and Simmer), this is the first actual colour I own by them!

I love this colour! I suppose it's a tan colour, hence the name, but really it makes me think of like coffee or mocha or something. The pictures aren't really that accurate :( they sort of make it look a bit yellowy.

I really like the OPI brushes, they're sort of flat which I find easier to work with and the lids make them easy to hold. This was two coats but could probably do with three if you're fussy. It's started to chip, but that doesn't really bother me as I like to change my nail colour quite often.
I think this has converted me, I'd definitely consider getting more OPIs, only off ebay though!

Sticky Toffee Cake

Last weekend I made a sticky toffee cake from the recipe here. It was a bit difficult converting the measurements into british ones, as we don't tend to use 'cups', but luckily it all turned out okay! Here's some pictures:

The cake itself was so fluffy and light, the perfect texture and tasted delicious, I don't like dates so instead of putting them in I used small chunks of fudge. As lovely as the cake was, my favourite part was the caramel sauce, I really didn't think it was going to turn out since I wasn't completely sure if I'd converted the measurements right, but I tasted it whilst it was in the saucepan and was literally lost for words, all I could manage was 'mmmm!' haha. It was so yummy, I would recommend serving the sauce separately in a jug so people can pour their own amount on, as the cake soaks it up quite quickly.

So thankyou very much Em Wampach for this delicious recipe, I'll definitely be making it again, in fact, we're celebrating Mothers Day this sunday as we were too busy at the weekend and I'm going to be cooking a three course meal for my Mum and Grandma, this will be the dessert!

If any of you guys try this recipe out she would love you to send her some pictures :) thanks for reading! xxx

Sympathy?

If I was an organised person I would have a few posts on reserve for days like today so that I had something to blog. Unfortunately, I am in no way an organised person and so since I am not feeling up to doing a proper blog post, I thought I would have a little moan instead :)

Today was really poo, I started to get some really severe stomach pains in my English lesson that kept coming and going and eventually got so bad I had to be excused. Luckily, I texted Chris and he left his lesson so he could take me home as I really wasn't feeling up to driving. By the time I got home I was in so much pain I couldn't stop crying, then to top it off I started to get some sickness as well, poor me!! :(
This is so random and I've never had it before, I had no idea what it is, a lot of people have been suggesting food poisoning but I can't think of anything I've eaten that could have caused it :/. I rang the doctors but they are so unhelpful, they make you feel like you're wasting their time and unless you're on your deathbed, they really couldn't care less.

Luckily it's eased off enough for me to write this blog post (aren't you lucky?!) and i've managed to catch up on all the blogs I follow from over the weekend which cheered me up a bit :)

But I do still need sympathy because my Mumma is out, Chris had to go home and i'm all aloney on my owny and to top it off my cat has just brought a baby rabbit in. Yes, that's right, a RABBIT. How on earth he managed to catch it I have no idea, I can deal with mice but not rabbits. I had to watch him kill it too because he wouldn't let it go. It's so cute, it really upsets me when he brings things in but I suppose cats will be cats :(.

Ill people shouldn't have to deal with these things! Sympathy please!! xxx

Nina Ultra Pro - Purple-Xing

Purple-Xing is literally AMAZING. I love this polish, it's definitely my favourite. I cannot get over how much of a stunner it is! I've posted so many pics because there's just so much to it that it can't be captured very easily, the very last close up picture is a good one but there's just so many sparkles in it all different colours, it's gorgeous! I'm babbling though, sorry.
On my index and middle finger I put on some top coat, just to see the difference it would make since it seems quite matte, although i'm not sure if that's just because there's so much glitter, I think I prefer it with the SV.
The polish is quite thick but still needs a couple of coats just to even out the coverage, it's really not difficult to apply though, I literally cannot think of a bad word to say about this polish, it's fab!!

So did you guys get anyone with an April Fools? A few of my friends told their parents they were pregnant as a joke! I have to say I did consider doing the same but I didn't want to be the cause of my mothers death, or mine depending on how she took it... Haha :)

Nina Ultra Pro - Luminous Lavender

Luminous Lavender is a very sheer polish. It's a bluey/white with a pink duochrome and is very shimmery. This is such a pretty colour, I can't stop looking at it!
The pictures below capture the base colour quite well but not the pink duochrome, although you can sort of get the idea of it in the last two pictures, and you can't really see the shimmer either :(
The application was pretty much what you would expect from such a sheer polish, took god knows how many coats to get to the opaqueness in the pictures and there is still some very obvious VNL, ugh. I usually hate sheer polishes as I really don't like the VNL but this one i'm actually quite keen on :)
This was all without my lovely Seche Vite, took so much willpower not to put it on!

Glimpse of the shimmery pink in the
bottle

Stupid short middle finger!

Nina Ultra Pro - Caramel Cream

Sorry for the lack of posts the past couple of days, i'm back on track now!
Today's Nina is a reddy/brown sort of colour, burgundy I suppose with a nice, gold shimmer - they sure do love their shimmer's, especially gold!
Unfortunately, from wearing this polish the last three days I have come to the conclusion that the gold shimmer likes to hide. I have not once been able to see any of it whilst outside, sunny or not. When I'm inside, you can see it a little bit but only if you're really looking for it, my camera actually picked it up a lot better than my eyes!
That said, I do really like the actual colour of the nail polish so it's not that much of a bummer although it would be nice to see the shimmer, it wouldn't stop me from wearing it. You can sort of see the shimmer if you look at the bottle in the pictures below.

Application was good, it needed two coats and doesn't take very long to dry, I love this brand! What do you guys think of the colour?

Weekly Gratitude

I have decided to take inspiration from Love, Life, Lace and do a weekly gratitude post every Sunday night  of all the things that have made me happy throughout the week. I think it's such a lovely idea... :)

21st - 27th March 2011
- thank you to the sun for coming out to play this week, it really does make everyone so much happier!
- thank you to whatever it was (probably the sun) that motivated me to exercise so much this week, it's so refreshing and takes the guilt away from my chocolate addiction!
- thank you to Tea a *HUG* From The Inside for her wonderful recipe on Sticky Toffee Cake that was so much fun to bake and even more fun to eat, especially the caramel sauce, oh wow... My family and Chris were very grateful for it!
- thank you to Wiltshire Police for being absolutely amazing in the Sian O'Callaghan enquiry, they were so thorough and quick with their investigation into this deeply upsetting case that touched the hearts of everyone in and around Swindon, you just don't expect something like this to happen so close to home but it's very reassuring to know we have such a fabulous police force keeping us all safe!
- thank you to my teachers who, for once, did not pile the homework on me this week so, although I do have one big essay to do, I can still breathe!
- thank you once again to Chris for my nail polish storage 'thingy'. I still can't get over how much I love having my colourful little bottles proudly on display!
- thank you to all my followers who actually read the crap I write and are interested in what I have to say, you guys make me so happy! :D

Nina Ultra Pro - Last Call

Last Call is another great colour from Nina. It's a lovely deep purple with some complimenting gold shimmer appearing when the light falls on it. The name struck me as quite odd as all the other names from this brand seem to be reference to the colour and this one is completely random, strange!
This wasn't as much of a pain to apply as the last two though, I (gasp!) didn't wear a basecoat and put two coats of this colour on, looking at them now I think they could probably have done with another coat though, just to really beef them up :)
Once again I apologise for the messy clean up, I swear my camera captures more than my eye, grr! If you look at the bottle in the pictures you can see the lovely gold shimmer, the bottom picture is a close up that I probably should have taken in sunlight although it does show you what it looks like indoors :)

Friday 25 March 2011

Nina Ultra Pro - Purple Pizzaz

Purple Pizzaz is another lovely colour from Nina. I don't really know how to describe the type of purple it is because it's just... well, purple really, the pictures are accurate though so you can see for yourself. I tried to take the pictures in the sun in an attempt to capture the lovely shimmers in this polish, it didn't really work though :( but take my word for it there's some lovely pink shimmers in this polish when the light catches it and if you look really hard you should also see some incredibly subtle gold shimmer in there too, it's probably quite hard to imagination that combination but it does look really pretty!
Unfortunately this polish again isn't quite as much of a dream to apply as the Rasberri Sparkle from the other day, it's not as opaque and takes about 2 coats to look decent but that's not really a problem anyway :)
Please excuse my nasty short middle finger! I'm ashamed to say I succumbed to biting my nails yesterday so this one and two on my right hand were the poor victims, booo! :(

Thursday 24 March 2011

Nina Ultra Pro - Royal Purple

Today's Nina is called Royal Purple. From looking at the bottles next to each other I assumed it was the purple version of yesterday's Rasberri Sparkle, I was wrong though, in the bottle they look very similar but on the nail they are completely different. For a start, the formula is completely different; applying this I started to hate it, it was quite difficult to apply evenly and is nowhere near as opaque as the Rasberri Sparkle, in the pictures below I'm wearing 3 coats of it!

The shimmer in it is similar to Rasberri sparkle and it's got the mixture of dark and light shades but that's where the similarities end. I'm really not keen on this polish at all to be honest! What do you guys think?

Nina Ultra Pro - Rasberri Sparkle

I only just recently discovered this brand when I spotted a few bottles in the bargain bucket at Sally's, this was one of them but I've recently been back and bought more at full price since I really like them and now have 7. I'd like to do a swatch of each of them so for the next 6 days that's what you'll be getting!
This particular one is called Rasberri Sparkle and is a lovely deep pink with a very subtle shimmer that looks fabulous in the sun!

I love the application of this, it's lovely and smooth and is so opaque it only needs one coat so it dries fairly quickly too. The close up picture sort of gives you an idea of the shimmer in it, it's got some light shimmery pinks that really show in the sun and some lovely dark pinks also. I thought I'd show you one of my cushions that reminds me of it, the polish is actually a little darker but the light shimmers in it are a very similar colour.

And this, so far is my collection of Nina Ultra Pro polishes, hopefully will be growing soon! L-R: Luminous Lavender* (you can hardly see this one), Purple-Xing, Royal Purple, Purple Pizzaz, Last Call, Rasberri Sparkle* and Caramel Cream*.

*I think these may be discontinued as they were the ones I found in the bargain bucket, they haven't gone off so that's the only other reason I can think that they may have wanted to get rid of them.
